For centuries, gemstones have been considered one of Mother Nature's most precious gifts. They have long symbolized prestige, power, and status, and some individual gemstones have had such an impact on us that we can trace their history back through hundreds of years.

A gemstone is any mineral that has been cut and polished for ornamental purposes. While there are more than three thousand minerals found naturally in the earth, only a small percentage of those have the durability and beauty to become gemstones.

Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of quartz, and can be found in hues from pinkish-violet to deep grape purple. It is a relatively hard gemstone, which makes it ideal for jewelry. It's found in the United States, Canada, South Korea, and Brazil, and top quality amethyst is valued at $50 per carat. Amethyst is traditionally the birthstone for February, and was the signature stone of princes, high priests, bishops, and cardinals. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that it would protect its owner from becoming intoxicated.

Citrine

Citrine is a variety of quartz that ranges in color from pale yellow to brown. As well as being beautiful, it is a very durable stone, making it ideal for use in jewelry. It is found primarily in mines in Europe and South America, and most commonly in Brazil. Citrine is traditionally the birthstone for November, and in ancient times, people thought it would protect them from poisoning or sudden death.

Garnet

Garnet is a mineral that is most often seen in red, but actually can be found in green, yellow, orange, and brown. Garnets vary in durability, but are generally hard enough to be an excellent choice for jewelry designers. Garnets are found in the United States, India, Russia, Central and South America, but are most abundantly mined in Africa. Garnet is traditionally the birthstone for January, and Noah is said to have used a garnet lantern to steer his ark through the night.

White, Green, London Blue, Swiss Blue, Sky Blue,
Champagne Topaz

Topaz is a mineral that comes in shades of brown, yellow, green, blue, red, pink, and even translucent (or white). Topaz is a very durable stone, which means that it can be used in jewelry without fear of damaging the stone through typical use. Topaz can be found on almost every continent in the world. Topaz traditionally represents beauty and splendor, and is one of the stones that form the twelve gates to the Holy City of the New Jerusalem. Green topaz may be used as the birthstone for May. London Blue topaz may be used as the birthstone for December. Sky Blue topaz may be used as the birthstone for March. White topaz may be used as the birthstone for April.

Peridot

Peridot is a mineral that comes in brilliant shades of green. It is quite durable, so those who wear jewelry accented in peridot do not need to worry about damaging the stone. Peridot is mined throughout the world, although the highest quality stones come from the Middle East. Peridot is traditionally the birthstone for August, and was called “emerald of the evening” by the ancient Romans, who discovered that peridot's color and shine does not change in evening or artificial light.

Pearl

Pearls are created when a mollusk (clam, oyster, etc.) builds a mineral shell around a foreign object that has embedded itself in the mollusk's soft tissue. Most pearls are not gemstone quality, which is why gemstone quality pearls are so valued. Pearls are traditionally the "birthstone" for June, and have long been synonymous with all that is rare, fine, and admirable.
